    Picked for you

    The Nordic circuit

Three steps people in Finland have trusted for two thousand years.

The ritual is simple. Heat opens you up, cold wakes you up, rest lets it all settle. Most guests go round two or three times.

Sauna heater and stones in the cedar room
    I · Heat

    Sit in the cedar

    10 to 20 minutes

Cedar heat up to 90°C. First-timers start at 10 minutes and leave when the body says so. Please keep water off the stones.

The suite's tub and shower, ready for a cold rinse
    II · Cold

    Plunge or rinse

    30 seconds to 2 minutes

Summer: the cold tub. Winter: roll in the snow, the Finnish way. Any time: a cold shower or the bath. Thirty seconds is real. Two minutes is Finnish.

The reading chair tucked into the corner of the bedroom
    III · Rest

    Do nothing

    15 to 20 minutes

Robe on, water bottle in hand. Sink into the reading chair in the corner of the bedroom. This is the part that resets you. Then go again, or call it a night.

Private. Book a two-hour block and the sauna is only yours. Your own gate code opens the courtyard for your session. Included: robe, sauna hat and towels.
    1. STEP 1

      Book your blocks

Sauna time comes in two-hour blocks, plenty for three rounds of heat, cold and rest. Pick your times when you book and we will lock them in. Need something different? Message me in the Airbnb chat and we will make it work.

    2. STEP 2

      Get your gate code

The courtyard gate opens with your own code, live only during your sessions.

    3. STEP 3

      Fire it up

Press power, set 90°C and a 60 minute timer. It takes about 30 minutes to heat. Our quick guide shows every button.

    4. STEP 4

      Heat, cold, rest

Robe and sauna hat on the hook, water bottle full. Two or three rounds is the sweet spot.

Warming up. About 30 minutes to 90°C.

    The science

Can saunas make you live longer?

Researchers in Finland have followed thousands of regular sauna-goers for decades. This five-minute TED-Ed lesson walks through what they found about heat, the heart and the body, and what scientists are still working out.

    Why stay here

The Nordic spa, without the crowd.

The big Nordic spas are wonderful, and busy. Here there is no locker room, no timed entry and no strangers. Just your session, your robe, and a cold rinse a few steps away.

    • Your session, your sauna. Nobody else in the cedar.
    • Walk out the door at sunset instead of driving home after.
    • Sleep twenty steps from the heat.

    Our story

    It started at the lake.

My papa built a wood-fired sauna at the lake. Winters, we rolled in the snow. Summers, we jumped off the dock.

My grandparents were Finnish and Swedish, so the sauna was never a luxury in our family. It was where we warmed up, slowed down and talked about the hard stuff. Some of my favourite memories are in that little wooden room.

Hockey took me to Europe for several years, playing in Norway, Poland and Germany. Prague gave me my first taste of real sauna culture. In Germany, the H2O baths near where I lived had dozens of saunas and full Aufguss shows, and I was hooked all over again.

This sauna is still part of my own routine, and that is part of the story. So it runs on bookings: you choose your sauna blocks when you book, and while they are yours, the cedar and the courtyard are completely private. I fit my sessions around yours, and nobody has to see me in a towel.

The Nordic countries sit at the top of the world happiness rankings year after year. A lot of that, I think, lives in small rituals: a coffee you actually stop for, heat and cold, time together. Nordic Escape is my way of bringing a little of that home to Calgary.

    Out your door

Rockland Park, where the city runs out of city.

Walk out the front door and three minutes later you are on the bluffs over Bearspaw Reservoir. Out here it does not feel like Calgary at all.

    • Haskayne Legacy ParkRight next door: paved pathways and nature trails above the reservoir, linking west to Glenbow Ranch.
    • The Bow River pathwayBike or drive down to Bowness and Baker Parks, facing each other across the Bow, and pick up the Bow River pathway. It follows the river all the way into downtown.

    How far is it?

Everything within reach, sorted your way.

Drive times and distances are approximate, from the suite, in good conditions. Mountain roads in winter can add time.

      Winter

Ski, ride, then sweat it out

Leave early for Lake Louise, Sunshine or Norquay, be home for dinner, and let the sauna take the ache out of your legs. Ask us about rentals for skis, boards and cross-country gear.

      Summer

      Tee times and long evenings

Valley Ridge and Lynx Ridge are ten minutes away. Stewart Creek, Silvertip and Kananaskis are an hour out. Finish in the cold tub.

      Any season

      Fly in, reset, head out

Land at YYC, sleep well on the first night, and arrive in the mountains rested. Or come back from them and reset before your flight home.
